My Poor Boy

Monday night at football John was tackled and broke his leg. He did a doosie as you can see. He broke his tibia and fibula about three inches above his ankle. He spent three hours in surgery and now has a screw that will permanently be in his tibia. The external fixture will be in his leg for at least six weeks. We are counting this as a blessing though. When they did the x-ray they found that John has a benign tumor just below where the break occurred in his tibia. This tumor weakened the bone and is likely the cause of the break happening in the first place and certainly the cause of the break being as severe as it is. John's orthopedic surgeon said that tumor may heal itself along with the broken leg, but they are going to keep a very close eye on it over the next couple of months. His football career is done though as the doctor does not recommend him playing contact sports ever again.
John has really amazed us with how high his spirits have been these past couple of days. He has been very good as Matt and I figure out how to be nurses and take care of him. Matt has been doing a great job at giving him bathes, but we have told John not to get to use to being treated like a King.
